English Channel Route

The English Channel is one of the busiest maritime zones in the world, connecting the coasts of France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. Despite being an intra-European route, it has become a site of increasing concern due to the growing number of people crossing in fragile and unsafe boats.
In 2024, 36,816 migrants and refugees made the crossing , often risking their lives in small inflatable vessels, navigating through strong currents, heavy maritime traffic, and unpredictable weather conditions.
This route, though geographically short, is extremely dangerous. Over the past years, several incidents and fatalities have underlined the urgent need to uphold the principle that no one should die at sea, regardless of their status or point of departure.
The English Channel highlights the importance of maritime safety, clear rescue coordination, and rapid response capacity, even in regions close to well-equipped coastal states.
This video provides a short visual overview of the route and the main risks associated with it.
